Umuahia South State Constituency: A Consolidation on The Fresh Start

Published

on

Umuahia South state constituency has overtime experienced an unwritten but cordial, gentlemanly and rancour free rotation of the house of assembly seat.

Though there has never been a time all the stakeholders has ever sat down to agree that other clans will not contest for the seat because it is the turn of another clan, yet the brotherly love inherent in ‘mmanu akara’ has imposed that discipline in our people and the voting population to ensure that all the clans has taken their turn to represent the good people of Umuahia South.

Basically and for the benefit of reading populace, there are three major clans in Umuahia South – Olokoro, Ubakala, and Umuopara.

Now, let us speak to ourselves with sincerity and a sense of history.

Upon the return of Democracy in the fourth Republic, it was Umuopara that kick started representation in 1999 with the election of Hon Ndukwe Adindu, who tried to seek a second tenure but was ousted by Hon. Leo Onyekwere in 2003, taking the turn of Ubakala clan.

Hon Ndukwe Adindu

Hon Onyekwere also tried to seek re-election but failed.

In 2007, Hon. Chijioke Madumere(Olokoro clan) was elected, and midway into his tenure he was ousted via the court by his Olokoro brother Hon. Chidi Nwosu, who completed his term and was also re-elected for a second tenure in 2011.

Hon Leo Onyekwere

Thus Olokoro did two terms at a stretch (2007 – 2011 and 2011 – 2015)

In 2015, Hon Chijioke Nwachukwu was elected, representing year another tenure for Ubakala clan.

Hon Chijioke Madumere

In 2019, Hon Chijioke Nwachukwu sought re-election but lost to Hon. Jerry Uzosike.

Hon Chidi Nwosu

Cummulatively, with the election of Hon Jerry Uzosike(from Umuopara clan)in 2019, all the three clans in Umuahia South had completed two tenures each, marking the end of what started in 1999.

Hon Jerry Uzosike

Thus, the election of Hon Emeka Tommy Obioma in 2023 can best be christened as a FRESH START for Umuahia South State Constituency(and coincidentally, it was same Umuopara that started the trajectory in 1999).

Hon Emeka Tommy Obioma

Having laid the above foundations, the salient question that should be on the lips of every patriotic son of Umuahia South is: Has Tommy represented very well to seek and deserve our support for a second tenure?

If the answer to the above question is in the affirmative, then there is nothing standing on the way of his re-election, because he will not be breaking any record if he goes for a second term on behalf of Umuopara clan. Hon Chidi Nwosu already broke that record, when he completed the tenure of Hon Chijioke Madumere (2007-2011) from the same Olokoro clan and went ahead to be re-elected ( 2011 – 2025). That puts paid the issue of second tenure in Umuahia South State Constituency.

In the words of Sir Peter Drucker, he opined that “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.”

Therefore while we wait for the second part of this series titled UMUAHIA SOUTH STATE CONSTITUENCY 2027 – BETWEEN CONSOLIDATION AND EXPERIMENTATION (a total X-ray of the score card and achievements of Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma), let us reflect more on the virtues that bind us together as a people and eschew clannish sentiments that will further tear down the walls of our union.

I call on the great sons and daughters of Umuahia South to embrace peace and jettison the mundane and pedestrian message of clannishness peddled by faceless individuals with no clear cut vision for our people.

Olokoro, Ubakala and Umuopara remain three inseparable brothers bonded by love and no single politicians ambition can ever alter that love upon which our brotherhood has thrived over these years!

Peace and Love!!!
