The management of Costcon Projects Ltd has felicitated with the Governor of Abia state Dr. Alex Otti on his emergence and swearing in as Governor of Abia state.

In a congratulatory message signed by the Chief Operating Officer of Costcon on behalf of it’s Italian, Russian and local partners, Chief Okey Agu and made available to Abia Pulse News, he stated that “the environment remains the only habitat man has and should be protected by every means possible.”

“And Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has exhibited a firm grip of what is needed to be done when he declared an emergency on waste disposal in the state.”

Chief Agu stated that, “The move by the Governor was originally meant to, first clean up the state before the unveiling of a true blue print, which Concon Projects Ltd has already placed on the table of the Governor to consider”.

In his words, “the world over, Waste management is an important factor, primarily considered when planning for urban regeneration”.

“The current waste management model adopted in the cities of Aba and Umuahia
have not lived up to expectation and does not meet United Nations standards as also obtainable in some other major cities in low to middle income countries, like
Nigeria.”

“The current approach to waste management in Aba and Umuahia is disorganized, haphazard and under resourced.”

Mountains of Refuse In Aba and Umuahia

“Municipal solid waste disposal in Aba and Umuahia poses severe challenge to environmental safety, public health and welfare of citizens. The situation is made worse by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse at roadsides, streets, waterways
and empty lands. The impact of this waste management practice in Aba and Umuahia is environmental deterioration.”

“At Costcon, we are bringing a model of recycling that collects and separates the components of waste, paying attention to those components of solid waste that may still have economic value.”

Typical Model of Collection And Separation of Waste

“One type of recycling we propose to introduce is the recovery and reuse of
heat energy- incineration. Incineration plants are also known as waste-to-energy (WTE) plants. The heat from the combustion generates superheated steam in boilers, and the steam drives turbogenerators to produce electricity”.

“Another type of recycling we are proposing is composting, which reclaims the organic parts of solid waste for reuse as mulch or soil conditioner”, and other components.

“There shall be a purposely designed centralized mechanical processing plants where recyclable wastes can be separated from garbage and processed.”

“Time will fail me here to go into a detailed espousal of the benefits proper waste management system in place in our dear state and we are happy that Dr. Alex, a man well read, exposed and enlightened chief executive, will tap into this novel waste management model”, he opined.

Chief Agu went ahead to say that “beyond guaranteeing a heathy environment and a clean state, the proposed URBAN RENEWAL AND WASTE MANAGEMENT MODEL by Costcon Projects Ltd, will not only create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and curb unemployment to a very great extent but it wil also shore up the Internally Generated revenue base of the state”.
